Distemper is a water-based paint with a flat, matte finish, traditionally more affordable than emulsion. It is suitable for interior walls with relatively smooth surfaces. Emulsion paints offer better washability, durability, sheen options and stronger weather resistance. For budget-conscious home renovations where washability is not a priority, distemper is an economical and effective choice. No. Distemper paint is designed for interior use only. It is not formulated to withstand outdoor weather conditions like UV radiation, rain, humidity and temperature extremes. For exterior walls, please choose from our Exterior Emulsion range — Safe Clean, Safe Guard, 4-in-1, Safe Care Shine or Safe Eco — which are specifically engineered for weather protection and outdoor durability.

Distemper can generally be applied over old distemper on interior walls after proper surface preparation. However, applying distemper over emulsion is not recommended, as the emulsion's smooth surface may cause poor adhesion. If converting from emulsion to distemper, lightly sand the surface first. For best results, always prime the surface with Crystal Prime before applying distemper for improved bonding and colour uniformity.

For a fresh surface, 2 coats of distemper on a primed wall gives the best result. For repainting over existing distemper in good condition, one coat may suffice if colour change is minimal. Apply the first coat, let it dry for 4–6 hours, then apply the second coat. Avoid applying thick coats as this can lead to cracking and poor finish. Dilute with water as per product instructions.

Distemper paints by nature have limited washability compared to emulsion paints. Light dusting and dry wiping are generally fine, but repeated wet wiping or scrubbing will affect the finish. If you need a washable finish — for children's rooms, kitchens or corridors — we recommend upgrading to our Interior Emulsion range like Breath Safe Shyne or Breath Care Eco, which offer good washability at very competitive prices starting from ₹192/litre.

OP konzept distemper typically covers 150–200 sq.ft per litre per coat on smooth, primed surfaces. On rough or porous surfaces, coverage will be lower. As a practical estimate, for a 10×12 ft room (4 walls, no ceiling), you would need approximately 6–8 litres for 2 coats. Always stir well before use and dilute as per instructions for optimal coverage and finish.

OP konzept distemper paints have a surface dry time of approximately 30–45 minutes at 30°C. Hard dry (suitable for a second coat) takes 4–6 hours. Full cure is achieved within 7 days. Being water-based and VOC-free*, our distemper dries without releasing strong fumes, making it safe to be in the room shortly after painting — unlike conventional distemper paints.
